Gran Suino italiano (GSI) was created in 2012 on the initiative of members of the swine supply chain (i.e., breeders, slaughters and processors) in the Emilia Romagna Region, located in the North of Italy. The aims of the organisation are: improving knowledge and the transparency of production and the market, improving the forecasting of the production potential, helping to better coordinate the way pigs and their products are placed on the market, drawing up standard forms of contract, developing initiatives to strengthen economic competitiveness and innovation, seeking ways of better managing inputs, ensuring product quality and soil and water conservation, promoting food safety, in particular through traceability of products, and improving animal health and welfare, encouraging healthy and responsible consumption of the swine products.
