Abstract:

European grown soy beans were ground, then dehulled (D) or kept whole (W), then extruded using a single screw extruder at 140 °C at about 100 kg/h (EP) or cooked at 150 °C during 60 minutes after flaking (FCP), and finally pressed. Extrusion allowed a lower residual oil content in the soybean meal (SBM), whereas dehulling resulted in a higher content of the protein. The trypsin inhibitor (TI) values were 2.6, 3.5, 3.6 and 7.6 TIU /mg, for EP-W, EP-D, FCP-W and FCP-D SBM, respectively. The lower temperature at the dryer exit for the FCP-D batch (90 vs 97 °C) probably explained a lower TI inactivation, which was confirmed by the in vitro hydrolysis using trypsine, chymotrypsine and peptidase (pH-Stat method). The nutritive values of the four meals were compared to a commercially available solvent extracted SBM in a 28-day performance trial using a total of 70 5-week-old barrow piglets, followed by a 5-day N balance study in metabolic cages with the same animals. Apparent (DIA) and standardized (DIS) ileal digestibility were determined by ileal chyme collection post-mortem. Diets contained the different SBMs as sole protein source. Three of the diets (EPD, EP-W, and FCP-W) resulted in similar performance and N retention compared to the control SBM, and had higher apparent and standardized ileal digestibility of amino acids than this control diet. Lower piglet performance and amino acids digestibility for the FCP-D diet highlight the importance of a low residual TI activity in SBM. Thanks to their excellent biological value, such meals produced from local and non-GMO soybeans could be of nutritional and economic interest in Europe.
